Can Telco "AI Factories" Succeed?
Telcos worldwide say they are working to establish datacenters to compete with hyperscaler cloud services and GPU service providers, as well as to boost government-backed sovereign AI. But the road ahead is long and expensive and involves complex webs of interconnecting partnerships.
Can this model really succeed?
Some of the world’s largest telcos are betting on it. From their viewpoint, the move to AI presents a unique opportunity to extend services to both public and private sector enterprises, opening up new sources of revenue.
This view is promoted by AI component provider NVIDIA, which describes the telco datacenters as so-called AI factories, or datacenters dedicated to AI services. Fastweb and its parent Swisscom, Indosat, SK Telecom, SoftBank, and Telenor, to name just a few, are being encouraged by NVIDIA in these AI factory efforts.
